SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FIELDWORK PARTICIPATION

In the summer of 2007, ñ renewed its emphasis on providing funding scholarships that enable individuals to participate in fieldwork in Western Asia and the wider Mediterranean, and also by awarding grants to support the archaeological projects themselves. Since 2007, ñ has awarded well over $1 million to more than 900 researchers and students with project grants, fieldwork scholarships, travel scholarships, and other research fellowships. In 2025, ñ plans to award over $250,000 in scholarships, fellowships, and grants.

Application Deadline

Scholarships Available in 2025

(Apply for all using the universal application form above. All scholarships support participation on ñ-affiliated projects.)

  • BIPOC Scholarships for Fieldwork Participation: BIPOC Scholarships for fieldwork participation are made possible through a donor-directed endowment that was established by generous donors who contributed to a challenge campaign in 2020 and 2021. The endowment’s major donor (Carolyn Midkiff Strange) stipulated that these scholarship funds be reserved for African American or Indigenous people of color. These funds represent a small part (about 10%) of ñ’s fieldwork scholarship program; ñ encourages all students and early career scholars to apply for fieldwork participation scholarships using the uniform application.

List of Previous Recipients

COVID disclaimer: If the ongoing COVID pandemic, or any other reason, does not allow for many archaeological excavations to take place during 2025, ñ may at its sole discretion decide not to offer fieldwork scholarships. If ñ deems such a decision as necessary, applicants may reapply for non-fieldwork summer stipends if ñ can offer stipends for 2025. Regrettably, applicants and successful applicants may not postpone fieldwork scholarships to another year if the applicant or ñ decides that fieldwork scholarships will not be awarded in 2025. If the pandemic or any other reason causes a cancellation of fieldwork in 2025, applicants must reapply for funding in 2026 (or for stipends if they can be made available in 2025).
